Legend goes that at the beginning of time, the universe consisted only of dark chaos. After 5,400 years, light matter rose and shaped into the sun, the moon, and the stars in the sky, and heavy matter sank to form water, fire, mountains, rocks, and soil on the earth. After another 5,400 years, life was born on earth. Land was divided into four continents, namely, the Eastern, the Western, the Southern, and the Northern. On the Eastern Continent was the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, on top of which was a divine rock. The rock became divine by being nourished by the sun and moon until it acquired supernatural powers after the separation of the sky and the earth. One day, it finally burst open and produced a stone monkey. The monkey created a considerable stir in Heaven. After more than five hundred years, a monk from the Southern Continent was entrusted to get Buddhist sutras from the Western Continent so people on his home continent could be relieved of pain and suffering. His pilgrimage did not come to a successful end until he endured 81 trials with the help of his disciples including the Monkey King, our irrepressible superhero.
