Rebellion and Remembrance in Modern Ireland

The many meanings of memorials, depending on their viewer, and other questions centered on memory, are applied in these essays (first presented at a 1998 conference at the National U. of Ireland in Cork, where the editor teaches history) to the way memorials of certain conflicts were viewed and observed in Ireland, especially the uprising of 1798. Other topics include: representations of Irish history in film before the 1916 rising, rebellion in Victorian fiction, and memory and the politics of the poor in Gaelic poetry and song.
