As I sit down to pen this preface in the quiet surroundings of Bongaigaon, Assam, on a crisp morning in early 2026, I reflect on the journey that has brought Methodology of Educational Research: A Comprehensive Guide into existence. Education, in its essence, is not merely the transmission of knowledge but the continuous pursuit of understanding—understanding ourselves, our learners, our societies, and the ever-evolving processes that shape human development. In a country as diverse and dynamic as India, where educational landscapes range from bustling urban classrooms to remote village schools, from digital innovations to traditional gurukul-inspired practices, the need for rigorous, contextually relevant research has never been more pressing. This book is my humble attempt; structure follows a logical progression that mirrors the research journey itself. Unit I lays the foundational understanding of what educational research entails its characteristics, importance, and diverse types— particularly highlighting action research as a powerful means for practitioner empowerment. Unit II demystifies the research proposal and the art of crafting a compelling proposal, with special attention to formats commonly required by Indian universities and funding bodies. Unit III explores research designs in depth, offering balanced coverage of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods approaches, illustrated with Indian educational examples. Unit IV, the heart of many research struggles, provides detailed guidance on data—its meaning, types, collection methods suited to school settings, organization techniques, and rigorous analysis and interpretation. Finally, Unit V equips readers with the skills to communicate findings effectively through well-structured reports that meet academic and professional standards. Throughout, I have incorporated Indian contexts wherever relevant: references to NEP 2020, RTE Act, challenges in multilingual education, equity issues in tribal and rural areas, the role of DIETs and SCERTs, and emerging trends like blended learning post-pandemic. Ethical considerations, often underexplored in introductory texts, receive prominent attention, as do practical tools such as sample questionnaires, coding frames, and interpretation guidelines. This book is intended primarily for: B.Ed. and M.Ed. students preparing for research components in their curricula Teacher-educators and school practitioners undertaking action research or school-based studies Research scholars embarking on M.Phil./Ph.D. work in education In-service teachers and administrators seeking evidence-based improvements No book on research methodology can claim completeness, for the field is ever-evolving. New paradigms, technologies (AI in data analysis, online survey tools), and socio-educational realities continue to emerge. I invite readers to treat this text not as the final word but as a companion—reliable, encouraging, and adaptable. I am deeply grateful to my family for their unwavering support, to my students whose questions sharpened my thinking, to colleagues in Assam and other states who shared insights, and to the countless educators whose dedication inspires this work. May this book empower you to ask meaningful questions, gather trustworthy evidence, and contribute meaningfully to the noble cause of education in India. Khritish Swargiary
