While performing some virtual reality experiments with the secret purpose of discovering the will of the Earth, 20-year-old Gamu Takayama briefly encounters the mysterious glowing red giant, Ultraman Gaia, at the end of a tunnel of light. He witnesses a battle between Gaia and a snake-like creature, called Zorlim, inside what appears to be the center of the Earth itself. Gaia eventually used his finishing move, the Photon Edge, to destroy Zorlim. Far above the Earth, almost touching the atmosphere, a wormhole began opening up. From that worm hole, a gigantic, blue, crystal-like object emerged, and heads toward Tokyo. But instead of crash landing, it stops in mid-air, and begins glowing as it rotated. Police officers evacuate the city as news crews tried to get in on the story. None of them would expect what occurred next: the crystal finally stopped rotating, and fell straight down, causing a shock wave that destroyed many and flooded many underground buildings. The people watched in disbelieve as the crystal was shattered from the inside, and a kaijiu emerged from it; the Cybernetic Organism Vanguard (C.O.V.).
